Box Office Battle: 'Black Widow' wins weekend with record $80M U.S. debut

"Box Office Battle" is The Fly's weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend's box office.

"Black Widow" set a new benchmark for the pandemic era in opening to $80M at the U.S. box office. Disney (DIS) said that the Marvel Studios' movie debuted to an estimated total of more than $215M globally this weekend, including $80M in domestic box office, $78M in international box office, and over $60M in Disney+ Premier Access consumer spend globally. The movie is the largest domestic box office opening since the COVID-19 pandemic began and the largest domestic opening weekend since "Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker" in December 2019. The combined theatrical and Disney+ Premier Access opening makes "Black Widow" the only film to surpass $100M in domestic consumer spend on opening weekend since the start of the pandemic. It is the highest domestic opening weekend for a Marvel Cinematic Universe origin story after "Black Panther" and "Captain Marvel."

Additionally, Imax (IMAX) said it "soared" to a $12 million debut for "Black Widow," reaching its highest grossing opening weekend of the pandemic era in 11 markets worldwide, including North America. At the resurgent domestic box office, "Black Widow" broke pandemic-era records for Imax across the board - delivering the company's biggest opening weekend box office, indexing, and per screen average since March 2020. The film grossed $7.2 million across Imax screens in North America, earning 9% of the domestic box office and a per screen average of $19,000.

BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal's "F9: The Fast Saga" placed number 2 with $10.9M from 3,649 locations. Behind it was DreamWorks Animation's sequel "The Boss Baby: Family Business," which earned about $8.7M. Universal's "The Forever Purge" placed number 4 with another $6.7M. Rounding out the top five, ViacomCBS (VIAC) subsidiary Paramount's "A Quiet Place II" grossed an estimated $3M.
